Abstract

Human resources of Indonesia actually has good potential, but the potential is not necessarily lead to a good performance, because the low competitive ability especially when competing with the stereotyped group has a higher capacity. Before began to competing already felt defeated, so it can degrade performance, people like this are experiencing stereotype threat. This phenomenon also occurred among students participating in the scholarship program Cerdas Sultraku in Unissula Semarang. Many students are difficult to get cumulative value 3.00 and allegedly experiencing stereotype threat . This allegation is supported by the results of a preliminary study on 124 students , it is evident that there is a significant influence stereotype threat to the GPA , r xy = 0.539 and Rsquare = 29.1 % , p = 0.000 ( p < 0.5 ) . These conditions encourage the study II with experimental design with the aim to see the effectiveness of the use of self-affirmation to reduce stereotype threat . There are 40 students who have cumulative value of Southeast Sulawesi below 2.75 were divided into two groups, namely the affirmation group and the control group. Stereotype threat conditions appear to provide an explanation manipulation Sultra student achievement data and Java and Java student declared to have higher achievement. Affirmation group was asked to write positive things and tell stories of having experienced success, otherwise the control group were asked to write negative things and the bad stories they have ever experienced, after which both groups were asked to work on the landfill. The results showed that the group achieved a score of potency academic test affirmation higher than in the control group ( t = 20.379 , p = 0.000 ) . Results of this study could be a reference to the importance of self-affirmation in order to compete with other groups.
