Membangun Kompetensi Komunikasi Antarbudaya (Studi Pemandu Wisata Dalam Menghadapi Hambatan Komunikasi Antarbudaya)

Abstract

Tourism sector becomes the fifth largest contributor to Indonesia revenue. That puts development in this sector as a must, not only limited in tourism infrastructure, but also in tourism human resources such as tour guide. Develop the tour guide competencies are one solution to set for effective outcome. Tour guide involve many relationship between several parties that might came from diverse background. This indicates that tour guide play a special role in intercultural communication, where barrier are slightly to occur. This research focuses on tour guide experience dealing with intercultural communication barrier between tour guide itself and the tourist. This purpose of this paper is to (1) define variation in communication barrier faced by tour guide and (2) investigate strategy to enhance intercultural communication competencies to overcome those barriers. The methodology is qualitative-descriptive. Primary data collections are through in-depth interview and observation. Secondary data collection is through literature study. Informants in this research are tour guides. Authenticity method employed as data validity, meaning by allowing informant to deliver as many as possible information that will be pursue by researchers. The results indicate that due to communication barrier, thus development of intercultural communication competencies is absolutely crucial for tour guide. There are at least several ways to develop this competencies such as enhance self competencies, broaden cultural knowledge, able to communicate in several language, practice and get involve in communication with diverse people with diverse culture background, do willing to discuss and share with other tour guide, on continuing basis participate on training, class, seminar, workshop, either formal and informal.
